When soil struggles, you can hear it

Soil Symphony is an art-science initiative that makes soil health tangible, audible, and actionable for citizens. It translates invisible soil processes — moisture, salinity, pH, temperature — into music, so people can feel change and act on it.

Rooted in the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”, the project pairs hands-on micro-remediation with live data storytelling at the intersection of science, technology, art and society.

Soil degradation is invisible
and that's the problem

Across Europe, soil health is declining due to salinity, pollution, drought, compaction and weak stewardship. This decline is largely invisible to the public and decision-makers, resulting in low “soil literacy” and limited everyday care.

Local communities lack engaging, low-cost tools that make soil status understandable — and make care into a habit.

Soil as a living instrument.

Live plant and soil signals are mapped onto a familiar, pre-composed piece of music. In healthy soil, the score stays “in tune”: stable tempo, clear timbre, rich harmony. As soil degrades, the data itself corrupts the music. As remediation progresses, the composition audibly returns to tune.
This direct, intuitive metaphor is the project’s engine for engagement and behaviour change.

From sensor to sound

  • A low-cost sensor stack reads soil and plant signals in real time (moisture, pH, electrical conductivity/salinity, temperature, plant electrophysiology).
  • A generative sound engine turns those readings into a live musical performance.
  • Citizens don’t just observe — they co-create, testing soil from their own neighbourhoods and gardens and comparing healthy vs degraded substrates.
  • Participants compose their own “soil scores” from live data, reinforcing learning through creativity.
